This March is B Corp Month: a time to celebrate and share what B Corporations are doing to be better companies for the world. WineStreet supports this, not only in spirit but also in practice. We have recently joined this fantastic group of businesses with sustainability at their core and are now a Pending Certified B Corporation! (We’re still a little too young for the full one)
So what is a B Corp?
B Corporations form a community of people using businesses as a force for good. Started in 2006 by three friends with careers in business and private equity, this community dedicates itself to making it easier for mission-driven companies to protect and improve their positive impact over time. The movement has grown relatively quickly around the world, with the first 82 B Corps being certified in the first year alone. Today, there are over 3,500 Certified B Corporations in more than 70 countries, and we are proud to be joining the ranks.
Behind them all stands the non-profit organisation B Lab, which leads the creation of standards, policies, tools, and certification for businesses who actively believe in an inclusive economy that tackles the most pressing social, environmental and economic issues of our times. Perhaps no better quote to describe them as Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s:
— “I often wonder to what extent business can help society in its goals to alleviate poverty, preserve ecosystems, and build strong communities and institutions… B Lab has proven that there is a way.”
It would be easy to say that we wanted to become a B Corp just to have a seal of approval. But whilst we appreciate the external evaluation, the value we see in being a part of this community goes much beyond patting ourselves on the back with a nice little logo in our footer. When we started WineStreet, we knew that we wanted to grow a sustainable business with particular values in mind. We looked into how other companies were doing this and searched for best practices that could help us build a strong foundation. B Corps, along with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, became an integral part of how we built WineStreet, long before we searched for certification. We found in them a community of people with the same values and goals, from whom we could learn from, and eventually contribute to. And so, at the beginning of this year, we successfully applied for certification. Given that WineStreet is less than a year old, we have to wait a little bit longer, so that our first anniversary can testify that the impact we try to achieve has actually been achieved. Why the rush? Well, why wait?
Perhaps you haven’t yet heard of B Corps. The movement is strong worldwide, but in Germany it is still relatively small. Currently, there are around 35 companies certified as B-Corps, some of which you might know, such as Coffee Circle, Einhorn, or Ecosia. Worldwide, however, there are plenty of companies you not only know but probably have used as well: Patagonia, Ecover, Ben&Jerry’s, or WeTransfer are just a handful of them.
These businesses, in more than 150 different industries, along with all the others, that although not certified, use B Corp as a Lighthouse, have all one thing in common. They all believe that businesses not only can, but have a duty to positively impact the world around us, the communities we live in, the ecosystems that sustain us, and the economic balance between us all.
